Angela
Johnson
Author Angela Johnson, in a statement, said
that she has only recently decided that she can now
call herself a writer. It is a seemingly humbling statement
from someone responsible from the creation of the young
adult novels, Humming Whispers, Songs of Faith and
numerous picture books which include Joshua by the
Sea/Rain Feet, Julius, The Rolling Stone, Dad Calls
Me Man and Tell Me A Story, Mama.
Over the years, Angela has won a number of distinguished literary awards for her work. Among these have been the 1994 Coretta Scott King Award for Fiction for the novel Toning the Sweep, the Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Award for her picture book When I'm Old With You, and the book The Other Side: Shorter Poems, which was the 1998 Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award Winner, and a 1999 Coretta Scott King Author Honor Book.
