On the fifteenth anniversary of
its founding, the National Book Foundation (the institutional
sponsor of the National Book Awards) commissioned a new award
statue to present to Winners of the National Book Award.
The statue, cast in an edition of
four, will be presented to the Winners in Fiction, Nonfiction,
Poetry, and Young People's Literature at the Awards Ceremony
and Benefit Dinner in November, in New York City.
The bronze statue shows a simple,
rolled sheaf of pages - signaling both the start and completion
of the act of writing - standing next to and at one with the
book. Associating the private moment of putting words on paper
with the triumph of publishing, this sculpture commemorates
the author's art and achievement.
