5 Under 35: Celebrating the Next Generation of Fiction Writers
On Monday, November 13, the National Book Foundation will introduce its newest program "5 Under 35," highlighting the work of the next generation of fiction writers.

Five National Book Award fiction finalists from previous years each selected one writer under the age of 35 whose work he or she found to be particularly promising and exciting. On the 13th, the five selected writers, Amity Gaige, Samantha Hunt, Bret Anthony Johnston, Rattawut Lapcharoensap and ZZ Packer, will read selections from their work, following an introduction by the National Book Award Fiction Finalist who selected them, at an invitation-only event to be held at the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York. The event will be hosted by novelist and founder of the acclaimed Happy Ending Reading Series, Amanda Stern. For information on the selected writers please visit  www.nationalbook.org/5under35.html.

National Book Awards Teen Press Conference at Donnell Library Center of The NYPL
On Tuesday, November 14, 250 middle and high school students from New York City public and independent schools will interview the 2006 National Book Award Finalists in Young People's Literature at the Donnell Library's auditorium for the ninth National Book Awards Teen Press Conference.

Students prepare for the event by reading one of the five finalists' books, and drafting questions based on various aspects of the text, the writing life, and what it means to be a National Book Award Finalist. At the event, each student will receive a professionally designed press kit with biographical information on each author, excerpts from their books, and materials related to the National Book Awards.

Danyel Smith, the Editor-in-Chief of VIBE and a novelist, will emcee the event, where authors read from their work before the floor is turned over to the students for the Press Conference part of the program. Following the Conference, students will be invited to meet the authors at a reception in the Nathan Straus Young Adult Center of the Donnell Library.
