Indie rock, artist Dan Flavin's light installations in the Paula Cooper Gallery, and novelist Amanda Stern's hip charm formed the backdrop for "5 Under 35", the National Book Foundation's first presentation of emerging writers selected by five former National Book Award Finalists: Amity Gaige from Massachusetts, Samantha Hunt from Brooklyn, Bret Anthony Johnston from Massachusetts, Rattawut Lapcharoensap from Brooklyn, and ZZ Packer from California. The Foundation's programs for emerging writers are supported by a grant from the Eleanor Franklin Egan Memorial Fund of The New York Community Trust.

HOT OFF THE PRESS: Reading Hot Spots Map (NYC)
Published by the National Book Foundation and Bloomberg

The Reading Hot Spots Map made its debut in front of hundreds of writers, editors, publishers, and reporters at this year's National Book Awards Dinner and Ceremony. Conceived by the National Book Foundation and designed in collaboration with Bloomberg, the maps are part of the National Book Foundation's "Readers in Residence" program, an after school program created to encourage middle school children to read. The maps will provide young people and their families with the locations of New York City bookstores, libraries and literary organizations where they can browse, read and spend time with books. The maps will be distributed to New York City public libraries, independent bookstores, and to targeted schools, as well as to participants in "Readers in Residence" and out-of-town visitors.
