National
Book Award Authors Timothy
Egan, Gene Luen Yang
and M.T. Anderson Honored

|
Timothy
Egan's The Worst
Hard Time: The Untold
Story of Those Who Survived
the Great American Dust
Bowl won the 2006
Borders Original Voices
Award in Nonfiction.
In November 2006, The
Worst Hard Time won
the National Book Award
in the same genre. Egan's
story about the 1935 Dust
Bowl is based on interviews
from survivors who recount
their experiences.

The Worst Hard Time,

Gene
Luen Yang's American
Born Chinese was
recently awarded the 2007
Michael L. Printz Award
for Excellence in Young
Adult Literature. The
same book was also a 2006
National Book Award Finalist
in Young People's
Literature. American
Born Chinese is
the first graphic novel
to be a National Book
Award Finalist.
Yang's novel portrays
the life of a Chinese-American
boy who moves from San
Francisco's Chinatown
to the suburbs, where
he is one of two Asian
children in the school.

American Born Chinese,

M.T.
Anderson's The
Astonishing Life of Octavian
Nothing, Traitor to the
Nation; v. 1: The Pox
Party, which won
the 2006 National Book
Award, was also named
a 2007 Printz Award Honor
Book. Set against the
disquiet of Revolutionary
Boston,
this novel, the first
of two parts, re-imagines
the past as an eerie place
that has startling resonance
for readers today.
