12 - 5 Under 35:
Celebrating the Next Generation
of Fiction Writers |
|
For
the second year, the National Book
Foundation will celebrate the work
of the next generation of young fiction
writers at the "5
Under 35" party
and reading. Five fiction writers
under the age of 35 were selected
by National Book Award fiction authors
who found the young writers' work
to be particularly promising and exciting
and among the best of a new generation
of writers.
The
writers to be recognized this year
are:

invitation-only event kicks off
National Book Awards Week and will
take place at Tribeca
Cinemas. Writers will be introduced
by the National Book Award author
who selected them and will read
an excerpt from their most recent
book. The evening will be hosted
by Sam
Lipsyte, author of Home
Land.

National Book Awards Teen Press Conference
at Donnell Library Center of The New
York Public Library
|
|
On
Tuesday, November 13, 250 middle and
high school students attending New
York City schools will gather at the
Donnell Library's auditorium for
the popular Teen
Press Conference to
interview the 2007 National Book Award
Finalists in Young People's Literature.
Students
attending the sold-out event are
preparing for the Teen Press Conference
by reading one of the five Finalists'
books and drafting questions based
on the text, the writing life, and
what it means to be a National Book
Award Finalist. At the event, participating
students will receive a professionally
designed press kit with biographical
information on each author and materials
related to the National Book Awards.
One student from each of the eleven
schools will be seated on the stage
with the authors.
Authors will read from their work
before the floor is turned over
to the students for the Press Conference.
Following the Conference, students
will be invited to meet with the
authors at a reception in Nathan
Straus Young Adult Center of the
Donnell Library.

New School
|
|
Even
though tickets for the National Book
Awards are by invitation only, all
twenty of this year's National
Book Award Finalists will appear on
the same stage on November 13 at 7
p.m. at The
New School in New
York City.*
Hosted
by Director of the New School Writing
Program Robert Polito and emceed
by fiction writer Bret
Anthony
Johnston,
a 2006 "5 Under 35" selection,
each Finalist will read for five
minutes from his or her nominated
work. Tickets for the always sold-out
event are on sale at $10.00 per
person and are available from the
New School Box Office at (212)

14 - The 58th National Book
Awards
|
|
The
National Book Awards Dinner and Ceremony
will take place at The New York Marriott
Marquis in Times
Square on Wednesday evening,
November 14 at 6:30 p.m., and will
be hosted by Fran
Lebowitz. Michael
Cunningham will present
Joan
Didion with the Foundation's
Medal for Distinguished Contribution
to American Letters, Ira
Glass will present Terry
Gross with the Literarian
Award for Outstanding Service to the
American Literary Community, and the
Foundation's judging panels will
bestow the National Book Awards for
Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry and Young
People's Literature. For more

The
2007 National Book Award Winners
will be listed on the National Book
Foundation's Web site http://www.nationalbook.org/
between 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. EST.
The Awards Ceremony will be filmed

A
few hours after announcing this
year’s short lists for the National
Book Awards, the National Book
Foundation asked a team of writers
to speak with this year’s fiction,
nonfiction, poetry and young
people’s Finalists.
The interviews reveal
how the authors feel about being
a National Book Award Finalist,
offer insight into how and why a nominated
book was conceived and written, and
thoughts on reading. The interviews
are posted on the Foundation’s
website, www.nationalbook.org.
