The Foundation’s website now features video from the 2007 National Book Awards Dinner. Coverage includes acceptance speeches from the Award Winners, as well as the presentations of two lifetime achievement awards to writer Joan Didion and public radio host and producer Terry Gross. These videos are available through YouTube, and can also be downloaded using iTunes. On Tuesday, November 13th, over 250 middle and high school students from New York City public and independent schools interviewed the 2007 National Book Award Finalists in Young People's Literature at the Donnell Library's auditorium for the ninth National Book Awards Teen Press Conference. Underwritten by Con Edison, all participants received special press kits designed by MindVolt. Following the Conference, students met the authors informally at a reception.

Second Annual 5 Under 35 a Success

The literary world descended on Tribeca Cinemas with "5 Under 35," the National Book Foundation's celebration of emerging writers who've been selected by former National Book Award Winners and Finalists. The event, emceed by Sam Lipsyte, in a space flanked by a three-foot, neon liquor sign over a 30-foot mahogany bar, gathered 250 writers, publishing professionals, and journalists to celebrate the 2007 "5 Under 35," and hear them read a selection from their work.

"5 Under 35" program was sponsored by Barnes & Noble and Random House.

Eat, Drink and Be Literary at Brooklyn Academy of Music Begins in January 2008

The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) presents nine acclaimed authors for Eat, Drink & Be Literary: Dinner and a Reading in BAMcafé. The events begin at 6:30 p.m. with live music and wine provided by Napa Valley's award-winning Pine Ridge Winery, followed by a delicious buffet dinner in the BAMcafé prepared by executive chef, Coleman Foster. The author readings and discussions begin at 8:00 p.m.

The featured authors and moderators are:
  • January 17: George Saunders, with Aoibheann Sweeney
  • February 7: Deborah  Eisenberg, with Aoibheann Sweeney
  • February 28: André Aciman, with Harold Augenbraum
  • March 13:  Fran Lebowitz, with Aoibheann Sweeney 
  • March 20:  Peter Carey, with Aoibheann Sweeney 
  • April 3: Shalom Auslander, with Harold Augenbraum
  • April 17: Charles Simic, with Edward Hirsch
  • May 15: Chinua Achebe, with Bradford Morrow

Tickets are $48 per event, including admission to the reading, dinner, wine, tax, and tip.  A 20% discount is available to those who buy tickets to five or more events.

IS HE DEAD? A New Comedy by Mark Twain, the Father of Modern Literature

Mark Twain’s recently discovered play, “Is He Dead?”, a fast-paced comedy, has been adapted for the Broadway stage. The plot centers around a struggling artist who stages his own death to drive up the prices of his paintings. Previews are being preformed at the Lyceum Theatre in New York City from November 8 through December 23, 2007 at reduced prices ranging from $45.00 to $56.00 per seat.
