Teen Press Conference at The New York Public Library

On Tuesday, November 18, over 250 middle and high school students from New York City public and independent schools interviewed the 2008 National Book Award Finalists in Young People's Literature at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture for the Eleventh National Book Awards Teen Press Conference. Underwritten by Con Edison, all participants received special press kits designed by MindVolt. Following the Conference, students met the authors informally at a reception. To receive author sheets from the special press kits of one or all of the Young People's Literature, please send a request to syoung@nationalbook.org. The author sheet includes a bio, a summary and space for taking notes about the honored book.

At the third "5 Under 35" invitation-only event, the work of the next generation of young fiction writers was celebrated at the packed-to-capacity Tribeca Cinemas. This year's honorees, Matthew Eck, Keith Gessen, Sana Krasikov, Nam Le, and Fiona Maazel, who were selected by former National Book Award Winners and Finalists, gave a brief reading from their selected book to writers, editors, agents, publishers, journalists and bloggers. The event was emceed by Dean Wareham and deejayed by Chuck Klosterman.

New York City Council Declares Week of November 17th National Book Awards Week in New York

The National Book Foundation received a Proclamation from the City of New York commemorating events that took place during National Book Awards Week 2008.

....New York City, the literary and publishing center of the world, owes much of its enduring literary passion to the National Book Foundation.

......National Book Awards Week provides a special opportunity for the world to discover the newest great American writing while also eagerly awaiting the announcement of the four National Book Award Winners in Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry and Young People's Literature.


For Booksellers, Librarians, and Teachers
New Complimentary NBA Promotional Materials - While Supplies Last

 The Foundation will be mailing bookmarks featuring  the 2008 National Book Award Young People's Winner and Finalists to booksellers, librarians and teachers on our mailing list. If you're not on our mailing list and wish to receive your packet of 100 bookmarks, please send an email to syoung@nationalbook.org.

A limited supply of author sheets of the 2008 National Book Award Young People's Literature Winner and Finalists are available for free. Each 11"x 6" author sheets includes biographical information, a summary of the honored book and space for taking notes. The sheets are a good tool for introducing and motivating young adults to read one of this year's titles. You can request a set of the five 2008 Young People's Literature authors or individual author sheets by sending an email to syoung@nationalbook.org.


Eat, Drink and Be Literary at Brooklyn Academy of Music Begins in January 2009

The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) presents eight acclaimed authors for Eat, Drink & Be Literary: Dinner and a Reading in BAMcafé. The events begin at 6:30 p.m. with live music and wine provided by Napa Valley's award-winning Pine Ridge Winery, followed by a delicious buffet dinner in the BAMcafé prepared by executive chef Tim Sullivan. At 8:00 p.m. the literary program begins with authors reading from their works, after which they will participate in a discussion with the moderator and answer questions from audience members.

The featured authors and moderators are:

  • January 15: Louis Erdrich, with Aoibheann Sweeney
  • January 22: Nathan Englander, with Daniel Menaker
  • February 5: Art Spiegelman, with Daniel Menaker
  • February 19:  Jimmy Breslin, with Daniel Menaker 
  • March 12:  A.M. Homes, with Aoibheann Sweeney 
  • April 2: Germaine Greer, with Katha Pollitt
  • April 23: Richard Price, with Aoibheann Sweeney
  • May 17: Ha Jin, with Aoibheann Sweeney

Tickets are $50 per event, including admission to the reading, dinner, wine, tax, and tip.  A 20% discount is available to those who buy tickets to five or more events.  Subscription and single tickets may be purchased through BAM Ticket Services at 718-636-4100. Single tickets may also be purchased online at BAM.org and in person at the BAM Box Office, Peter Jay Sharp Building, 30 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn. BAMcafé is on the second floor of the BAM Peter Jay Sharp Building.
