Sherman Alexie's first young adult novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which won the 2007 National Book Award for Young People's Literature, has been selected for this year's Brazos Valley Reads 2009.

Organized by novelist and friend of NBF Angie Cruz, Brazos Valley Reads is a community effort organized by Texas A&M University's English Department to build a bridge between Texas A&M's students and staff and the Brazos community at-large. This year's Brazos Valley Reads is expected to draw several thousand participants. To help young people in underserved communities to take part, publisher Little Brown Books for Young Readers has donated 100 copies of The Absolutely True Diary to local high school students so they can participate in the March 3 visit and related events. According to Little Brown, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Alexie's first book for young-adults, has sold 250,000 copies in hardcover since it was published in October of 2007.
