Presenter of the National Book Awards

The Contenders, Free NBA E-Book Series

The Foundation announces that it has made available for the first time The Contenders: Excerpts from the 2013 National Book Award Finalists, a free National Book Award eBook series available for download in a variety of formats.

Created and distributed with the assistance of Penguin, under the careful and energetic stewardship of Matthew Boyd, whom we wholeheartedly thank. Other thanks go to Susan Petersen Kennedy, President of Penguin Group USA and a member of the board of directors of the National Book Foundation, whose encouragement and leadership allowed us to take a big step forward in bringing this great literature to a wider audience, and Amy Gall, who compiled much of the material.

In presenting four digital books containing excerpts from the 2013 NBA Finalists, we hope readers will find in them a representation of the best work of the year in writing for fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people's literature, and be encouraged to read all of the NBA Finalist books.

—Harold Augenbraum, Executive Director, National Book Foundation
