Mosholu Montefiore
Community Center
Bronx, New York
March, 1995
Ms. Schwartz met with
seniors, young students and teens at the Mosholu Montefiore
Community Center in the Bronx. Ms. Schwartz carefully
crafted each session with these different audiences
in mind.

Prior to her visit, seniors were asked to bring a photograph
of themselves, preferably taken long ago, to her workshop.
After reading a poem she wrote based on a photograph
of her father, Lynne asked each member of the audience
to tell the story of his or her individual photograph,
with the intention of encouraging them to write their
stories down.
With the younger students, Lynne answered questions
about herself and her writing, read a poem about a children's
game, and then helped them write poems of their own
about their favorite games. Later, Lynne talked with
the teens about her life as a writer, read a short story
about herself as a teenager, and started them on writing
their own stories about who they'd like to become.
In 1995, the National Book Foundation
presented three author residencies in City Settlements,
as well as sponsored its Summer Writing Camp in alliance
with United Neighborhood Houses and the YMCA.
