In 1998, The National
Book Foundation partnered with three organizations as
part of its Settlement House Author-Residency Program,
and expanded its residencies from two days to five.
Tor Seidler, a 1997 National Book Award Finalist for
Young People's Literature, spent a week working with
youngsters at The Girls Club, located in the
Morrisania section of the Bronx, from May 11 to
May 15.
He
met with two groups of boys and girls each day, all
of whom were given copies of Tor's books to keep. The
younger group ranged from six to seven years old, and
read Mean Margaret, his award-winning book for
the 1997 National Book Award for Young People's Literature.
The older group (age 10 - 12) was given A Rat's Tale.
Tor was amazed and pleased to discover that before his
arrival, the counselors for each group had instilled
enthusiasm for the program by discussing his books with
the children.
