2000
marks the tenth year of the Foundation's New York City
based Settlement House-Author Residency program.
Andrea Davis Pinkney, editor and author of picture
books and young adult novels visited Jacob Riis Settlement
in Queens the week of April 10. Readers ranging from
ages five through thirteen were given one of Ms. Pinkney
books to read before she arrived. She brought literature
alive through song, music and slides, and conducted
writing exercises to entice the readers to tell their
own stories. When her five-day residency ended, over
one-hundred-and-fifty readers said their good-byes to
Ms. Pinkney, but all wondered when she would return
to Jacob Riis. Some budding writers had completed the
stories they started when Ms. Pinkney met with them.
Others were motivated to read more of her books and
anxious to discuss them with the visiting author.
