BRONX, NY
MAY 22 - MAY 23, 2003
Tony Medina
met with about 75 three to five year olds. As his young
audience sat on the floor and listened to him read poems
from his Love to Langston and Be Boy Buzz
by bell hooks, he prompted them to repeat a few stanzas.
His reading from Jazz Baby by Carole Boston Weatherford
had the audience laughing when a few of the young readers
volunteered to show how they danced to the poetry in
the book. All of the presentations ended with the author
asking his audience to hug the person next to them.
Lee & Low Books offered books
at a discount, which were donated by the Foundation
to participants.
The National Book Foundation Settlement
House Author Residency program is made possible through
a leadership grant from the Theodore H. Barth Foundation,
with additional funding from the Educational Foundation
of America, New York Community Trust, R.R. Donnelley,
and the New York State Council on the Arts.
