Saul
Williams debut performance and featured
poetry in the film "Slam", which he co-wrote
and starred in, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance
Film Festival in 1998, the Camera d'Or at the Cannes
Film Festival, along with the Audience Award for Best
Picture and the World Distributors Award for Best Picture.
Since then Saul has written three books of poetry,
Said the Shotgun to the Head (2003 MTV Books/Pocket
Books), She (1999 MTV/ Pocket Books), and the
Seventh Octave (1998 Moore Black Press). In 2001,
Saul released his debut album, "Amethyst Rock Star",
which he co-produced with Rick Rubin. The album received
critical acclaim and was voted one of The London Times'
albums of the year.
Saul's recent work has been of worldly importance as
he has contributed his skills to the Not In Our Name
initiative. His draft of their Pledge of Resistance
served as a manifesto of millions across the world who
have sought to stop the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Saul has performed, toured, and lectured across the
world and is the youngest living poet to have his work
included in the curriculum of dozens of schools across
the nation. He has recently enjoyed a recurring role
as a poet/boyfriend on the Kelsey Grammar produced sitcom,
"Girlfriends". In 2004, Saul will perform,
with the Basel Symphony Orchestra of Switzerland, a
symphony based on his latest book, Said the Shotgun
to the Head, composed by the legendary Thomas Kesslar.
