Blue Star Families’ Books on Bases, Winner of the 2014 Innovations in Reading Prize

Each year, the National Book Foundation’s Innovations in Reading Prize awards five prizes of $2,500 each to individuals and institutions that have developed innovative means of creating and sustaining a lifelong love of reading. The National Book Foundation is proud to recognize Blue Star Families’ Books on Bases program as a winner of the 2014 Innovations in Reading Prize.

BSF gives a voice to under-heard military families from all branches of service and all walks of life. Through robust programming and outreach, our organization provides a connection between America’s military families and those in our government, national organizations, and local civilian communities.We foster a better understanding of the unique challenges of the military lifestyle and help to create a more sustainable military and a stronger America. Blue Star Families’ program Books on Bases facilitates stress relief, self-expression, and dialogue among military children by hosting reading events, distributing free books, and holding national reading contests for military children. Since its inception in 2009, Books on Bases has held more than 214 events and distributed over 124,000 free books to families, schools, and libraries, impacting more than 362,000 military children.
