Minor Detail begins during the summer of 1949, one year after the war that the Palestinians mourn as the Nakba—the catastrophe that led to the displacement and exile of some 700,000 people—and the Israelis celebrate as the War of Independence. Israeli soldiers murder an encampment of Bedouin in the Negev desert, and among their victims they capture a Palestinian teenager and they rape her, kill her, and bury her in the sand. Elisabeth Jaquette is a translator from Arabic and executive director of Words Without Borders. Her translation of Minor Detail by Adania Shibli was a Finalist for the 2020 National Book Award and longlisted for the International Booker Prize. Her other translations have been shortlisted for Warwick Prize for Women in Translation, the Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation, and the TA First Translation Prize. Elisabeth’s work has been supported by the Jan Michalski Foundation, a CASA Fellowship, and several English PEN Translates Awards, and her shorter translations have been featured in the New York Times, McSweeney’s, and The Common, among others. In 2019, she served as a judge for the National Book Award in Translated Literature.
