Ernest Samuels was the Franklyn Bliss Snyder Professor of English at Northwestern University and wrote a three-volume biography of Henry Adams that won several major awards. Samuels was also the authorized biographer of art connoisseur Bernard Berenson. Prior to earning his doctorate in English at the University of Chicago, Samuels attended law school and practiced law in Chicago in the 1930s.
